REAL SQL Server 2009: Preview
REAL SQL Server 2009 was announced earlier this year at REAL World, and is now in beta. We are very excited about the new features and increased performance. Here's a list of the highlights of REAL SQL Server 2009:
- Architecture: Thanks to the new completely re-engineered architecture, REAL SQL Server is now able to achieve an unprecedented level of performance and scalability. With the new event based asynchronous architecture, a preliminary version of the server was able to handle more than 12,000 concurrent connections on a single iMac. REAL SQL Server will be one of the few DBMS that is able to solve the C10K problem (more about this on http://www.kegel.com/c10k.html
- MVCC: Model View Concurrency Control is a feature found only on Enterprise DBMS. REAL SQL Server adopts it in order to be able to completely delete the word "lock" from your dictionary and in order to increase concurrency and scalability. More on MVCC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiversion_concurrency_control.
- Plugins: REAL SQL Server will support external plugins written in C/C++ that allows an unprecedented level of customization for a DBMS. With plugins, the authors will be able to customize the SQL syntax understood by the server and extend the custom commands. REAL SQL Server will also be able to natively load standard sqlite extensions.
- Restore Points: REAL SQL Server supports a very flexible and customizable RESTORE Point feature. You can restore databases from a backup or from a restore log file, so your mistakes, even a DELETE * from Table command can be recovered with just a click!
- ...and there are a lot of new and exciting features introduced in the 2009 version like Server Size cursors, client messaging, FTS3 support, BTree support, register based virtual machine and much more!
