I found the tutorial too verbose and not targeted at me as a programmer. I
couldn't justify the time necessary to get though it. For an experienced
programmer and especially if that programmer was coming from a Windows/VB
background (that's me) it isn't particularly useful. What would be MUCH
more helpful would be two things:
First, make a better help system. Visual Basic isn't the best system help
available but it is mature and functional. Help is well integrated into the
IDE. Each topic is cross linked and has references to related subjects.
Examples are complete implementations for concepts covered. The RealBASIC
help system or the books in Acrobat format is NOT a replacement for an
effective help system.
RealBASIC help should have examples that work in Windows, Mac and Linux
environments even if three code examples were required to accomplish this.
Many topics natural to Mac programmers are totally foreign to Windows and
Linux programmers so don't make assumptions!
Second, a publication that tells how common tasks that a programmer would
encounter are accomplished. For the Windows/VB convert parallel examples
from the VB would ease the pain.
Though I've been disappointed the documentation and available books, this
list and a solid BASIC product has convinced me stick to the task learning
RealBASIC. I'm excited about the cross platform capabilities and think
RealBASIC is the only viable commercial product in this arena that is
productive.
Well that's my $.02 worth.
-Scott.
