Look in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/. Control-click on one of the
icons there and select show package contents, then double click
contents, then double click resources.

Ok, thanks. One quick question. Is there a way to grab the masks? I need the masks as well. I've tried making my own, doesn’t look very good at all.

You have to open the tiff files with a program that supports alpha channels, like Photoshop. The mask is stored in alpha channel one.
Somebody needs to write an RB plugin or class to open tiff files...

I am curious, what are the legal concerns behind using the icons in System Prefs? Are they open for other developers to use, or has apple copyrighted them and reserved them for that only. Does that also apply to the icons in other Apple made OSX apps? Right now I'm using icons taken out of mail.app, terminal.app, and the system prefs panes. I just want to know if there's a possibility of getting sued. Does apple have a collection of public domain icons for OSX?
