I am curious, what are the legal concerns behind using the icons in System Prefs? Are they open for other developers to use, or has apple copyrighted them and reserved them for that only. Does that also apply to the icons in other Apple made OSX apps? Right now I'm using icons taken out of mail.app, terminal.app, and the system prefs panes.

I just want to know if there's a possibility of getting sued.

Unless Apple is into mass-suing, I think you're ok. ALOT of apps use system resources.

Does apple have a collection of public domain icons for OSX?

Not that i know of. I sometimes look for icons (iconfactory.com or xicons.com) and use those as they are in the public domain.
