Well, I'm not sure if this is the problem since you mentioned you're not 
having trouble saving cross-platform styled text.  However, on the Mac, 
styled text is typically stored with the text in the data fork and the 
style information in a 'styl' resource in the resource fork.  If you're 
reading such a file, are you reading the style data as well and including 
it in the compressed data?
