Yes, certainly that was one of the major benefits of HFS+. All my drives
(various between 4GB and 80GB) are formatted with Apple Drive Setup and they
all have a block size of 4K. I don't believe you can change that with Drive
Setup.
If a drive is formatted with another utility, such as Silverlining, it's
just possible that the block size is larger. The default is again 4K but you
can set it to various options ranging from 512 bytes to 64K. If you know,
for example, that you will be dealing with primarily large files you might
choose a block size as big as 64K. That way you'll end up with less disk
fragmentation and faster file I/O with those large files.
