About "processor cycling": I don't think that it's available anywhere
but on portables.
The timer thing: It's all about giving the app more processor time.
Haveing a timer fire rapidly forces the OS to give more time to your
app. Otherwise it's considered "idle" as long as you don't move the
mouse or do other things; so the valuable precossor time goes to other,
more important processes (like your screensaver <g>). I don't know the
details, but I guess ther are other techniques to tell the MacOS that
your app is NOT idle; and apps like Internet Explorer etc, are probably
using one or another.
