I think there is no solution to that problem other that to make up your
own "open" dialog. AFAIK no other application allows you to select a
folder OR an application from within the same (standard) dialog.
A workaround solution would be not to let the user select the
file/folder from a dialog, but rather let them drag&drop the desired
file/folder onto your window or the like. Of course that works only for
some situations.
