Just verified this with Windows NT. If you leave the new file with the
original name, the windows short cut finds the new file, not the old one,
nor does is message cant find shortcut...

Not usually. Aliases use a variety of methods to find the original
file, including the file name and folder ID, which are unchanged in
this case.
