In some circumstances, yes. (But if for example you're adding two
MacRoman strings, or a MacRoman and an ASCII string, then the result
is MacRoman.)

I wonder that too. :)
Knowing the internal working of something can be a good advantage,
but then we fall into 'non documented' trap ('non documented' = no
guaranties to stay the same in next versions).
Only if you're relying on the undocumented behavior.
