Could anybody tell me if it is possible to have an textbox format text in vertical columns, and have the columns appear right to left

No. (It's easy enough to draw text that way, but the EditField works with the more common horizontal format.)

the way Japanese text is supposed to be displayed?

That's an exaggeration. Japanese text can be written in both formats (left-to-right starting at top, or top-to-bottom starting on right). In my experience the horizontal format is more common for printed text, and certainly more common on computers. Our Japanese distributors and users have never complained about it.

Unicode allows my Japanese fonts to display with no problem, but it's not very useful if it can't be displayed vertically. I hope somebody can help me because this will determine whether I shell out for a copy of RealBasic.

If you don't, I'd be interested to hear what you buy instead. REALbasic's support for Japanese is far better than any other development environment I know of.

Cheers,
- Joe
