Not all books and newspapers use vertical text.

If you actually do need to layout vertical text though on a US English
system, you can. InDesign CS has excellent support and includes a few
attractive Japanese fonts. I believe Word XP or higher also supports it
(don't know on the Mac), but its pure pleasure with InDesign.
