There is asbundant documentation everywhere. This is another:

I don't have the link, but the Adobe Postscript manual also has very good, 
clear diagrams.

I first noticed this because g.stringwidth was not giving the same result as 
stringwidth in a postscript file, which I was using to justify, quad right 
and center the text.

In my case it is not a missing font. Since you and Mr. Austin have confirmed 
that is happening on other systems than mine, I have filed a bug report:
