Hi Norman,
Thanks for your comments. The bmp files were made in Photoshop 3.0 on a Mac 
with OS 9. Nothing special, I just did a save as .bmp in Photoshop. And yes, 
they do open in Preview on the Mac. The .png files that I tried were made 
>from the bmps using Gimp on Linux.

It won't be a huge job to fix this. I think I can just add picture properties 
to a module using the same names and then load them from external files at 
startup. I think this will elimintate the need to change any code where they 
are used.

I'm going to experiment a little with and without extensions on the names etc.
