Robert - careful with this. Fargo's correct that the information *about* icon assignments can be located in the registry, but you'll still need to use MFC/WIN32 calls to get the image information.

I realize that you're trying to do this using native code, but the MBS suite has an Icon handler set that works great of OS X and Windows.

Indeed, that's a good point. Especially since icons are often stored in executables and dlls.
