Never heard of FLEX or AIR..

They said they were "kicking around the idea of making there own chat" not sure why,
perhaps for in house use, not really sure.

I had forgotten about FLEX and AIR. The apps are very pretty and seem stable, at least under linux. When first launched there were some sound issues, because it was using OSS as I recall, but that seems to have been resolved. Could definitely be worth looking at for you.
