Environment variables in a Console app?

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if it's possible to read environment variables from  
within a Console app?  I'm starting a helper app (that's a console  
app) and some of the properties used need to be gleaned from the  
environment.
I know that I could Shell exec a call to "env", but I'm hoping there's  
a more direct way.
