I realize that this doesn't solve Ben's scenaria well, but I somehow had the
urge to document all my knowledge on plugin architecture using RBScript and
wrote this article:

It includes a fully working example of an app using plugins to convert
various files to text (.doc, .textclipping), all in a rather clean and
reusable design (or so I hope).

Let me know if you find errors in it or find things hard to understand.
