They _should_ just ignore things they don't understand though

Unfortunately, there are many things that simply are not transferrable to earlier versions. The change in the naming of Supers in 2008 won't translate back to the format in 2007. They will translate when the opposite occurs (i.e. 2007 to 2008).

Best if the users of your projects update to the version you have used.
