If you want something that works in all three major platforms, the
answer is free. It is called PHP, Java, Javascript combined with MySQL
or for a really robust solution ... ORACLE. Only the Java components
need to be compiled if ever. Run everything in a browser window. How's
that for a real solution? It is about as BASIC as you are going to get.
For really complex operations include C, CGI and PERL components.
Best part, FREE of charge to you. Beat that! Ton's of applications
written by in-house staffs for companies with tens of thousands of
people accessing the same programs at the same time are running rock
solid, 24/7. If you are doing more than writing a program to be seen on
download.com, move up and move on!
Now, THAT is MY 2 Cents with a tip thrown in for the server. ;-)

Hi Mike,
Your solution above would be great for some situations and I've used the
same or similar on lots of projects over the years.
However, it isn't perfect for every situation and doesn't change the
fact that Real Software advertises RealBasic as a
"write once, compile for Windows, Mac & Linux" programming language.
This is the product that I GLADLY purchased and will more than happily
purchase again from whoever can actually live up to their advertising.
Unfortunately for Real Software it doesn't appear likely that I'll
purchase from them again. Though I keep lurking here in hope.. :-)
I really don't understand RS's attitude....
What I'm looking for is after all only bugfixes, the items work as
expected on the other platforms.
When they moved to Fogbugz I'd hoped they might have picked up Joel
Spolsky's "zero known bugs" attitude but alas all the bugs that are
stopping me from being a customer have been known about for a number of
years.
Regards
Denis Crowther
