REAL Software Ships REALbasic 2005 for Macintosh

Completely Redesigned to Enhance Productivity and Speed Software Development

AUSTIN, Texas, USA (June 14, 2005)— REAL Software today announced that REALbasic 2005 for Macintosh, a groundbreaking new release of the product, is shipping. REALbasic 2005 includes a brand-new user interface that improves productivity and ease of use for both new and experienced Macintosh software developers. REALbasic 2005 also incorporates the latest Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" Spotlight technology integrated right into the application.

"REALbasic 2005 represents the most significant upgrade to REALbasic ever," stated Geoff Perlman, president and CEO of REAL Software. "We used extensive feedback from our customers and interface experts at Apple to help design a new REALbasic interface that makes Mac software development faster and easier for both experienced and novice developers alike."

"The Mac OS X development community is growing and maturing with many developers already on their second or third generation Mac OS X version," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "We're thrilled REAL Software has created an excellent platform for developers on the Mac which takes advantage of Apple's breakthrough Spotlight search capability."

REALbasic for Macintosh includes a host of new features and functionality:

  • The user interface for REALbasic 2005 has been completely redesigned to make it more accessible to new users. The new browser-style tabbed interface keeps items in the work area nicely organized. New toolbars have been added that contain the most common functions. A Status bar provides up-to-the minute information. The window editor, code editor and language reference have all been improved as well. View a screenshot.
  • REALbasic's newly redesigned interface also helps experienced users be more productive. Multiple projects can now be opened and searched. Search results, including those found with regular expressions, can be listed in batch. REALbasic 2005 also includes a new database browser. All of these capabilities make it easier to find things and work more efficiently.
  • REALbasic 2005 leverages the Spotlight technology in Tiger in three ways. REALbasic users on Tiger can search all of their REALbasic projects from within REALbasic. They can also use the REALbasic Spotlight Plugin to include REALbasic projects when using Spotlight from the Finder. The SpotlightQuery class added to REALbasic 2005 enables developers to incorporate Spotlight searches into their applications.
  • New Container Control makes it easy to create custom user interface controls. It also makes it easy to encapsulate code to facilitate code maintenance.
  • REALbasic 2005 includes REAL SQL Database, a new SQLite-based single-user database engine recently acquired from SQLabs.
  • Web pages or any other HTML-based content can now be included directly in any REALbasic application via a new HTML viewer control.
  • REALbasic is now made with REALbasic and is an excellent example of the kind of software that can be created with REALbasic. REAL Software engineers have incorporated many new features and functionality; REALbasic developers will reap the benefits of these substantial improvements.
