- REAL Studio is a new edition of REALbasic specifically geared for full-time, professional software developers. Starting with REALbasic 2009 Release 2, a selection of features that are currently in Professional Edition will be moved to Studio Edition. REAL Studio includes:
- Advanced features, like the Profiler, and IDE Scripting
- Telephone support (available in English only)
- Expedited phone and email support inquiries - so Studio users support issues will take priority over Professional users
- A REAL Server license with unlimited connections
- 12 months of updates with a new license, rather than the 6 months included with Personal and Professional
- A license key that runs on all three platforms

I am a current Professional Edition user. Do I have to buy a new REAL Studio license?
- No. Current Professional Edition users will be able to choose to stay with Professional with the knowledge that they will no longer have access to the features listed above. But, starting with Release 2, Professional users will have a lower renewal price. Or, current Professional users can choose to upgrade their Professional license to Studio for free. This will offer the multi-platform license key, telephone support (for English only) and access to the Studio features until the update plan expires.
- No. When you upgrade to Studio your license will expire when your current license plan expires, so you will not lose anything you have already paid for.
Can I purchase renewals at the current price to add on to my renewal plan?
- Yes, you can purchase up to two years of renewals at the current price as long as you do so before release 2 ships in mid-April. Also, if you are going to purchase early renewals, you must do so BEFORE you upgrade your license to Studio.
Can I still do cross-platform compilation with REALbasic Professional Edition?
- Yes, you can still cross-compile your applications for Mac, Windows and Linux from Professional.
How does this change affect academic users?
- Academic users will still receive a 30% academic discount on licenses and renewals. Academic users can also upgrade their license to Studio for free.
REAL Studio comes with a multi-platform key. What does that mean?
- REAL Studio users receive a license key that can be installed on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. The license agreement for REAL Studio allows users to install their key on any number of computers and operating systems as long as they are the only user. The license is on a per developer basis.
Can I downgrade from REAL Studio to another version of REALbasic?
- We do not have a downgrade option on any of our products. Just as if you move from Personal to Pro, if you choose to upgrade to Studio, your Pro key will become a Studio key. If you decide that you would like to use Pro instead of Studio at a later time, you would need to purchase a new Pro license. If you have any questions, please contact customer service.
